Scratch is a new networked, media-rich programming environment, designed specifically to enhance the development of computational ideas and technological fluency of youth in after-school centers and other informal learning environments.

Scratch is currently being developed as a new research technology by MIT Media Laboratory and UCLA, with funding from NSF ITR program.

The core features of Scratch including graphical building-block programming, programmable manipulation of rich media, connections to new types of sensors and input devices, ability to easily share programmed objects over the web, and automatic translation of programs into Spanish and other languages.

Scratch will allow youth and visitors to learn to design new types of projects, such as videos based on programmable image processing, physical sensor-controlled music, and networked animations.

Once the development is finalized the Scratch programming language will be available for download free of charge, allowing interested youth and other visitors to access it at home, school, or after school centers.
