This is how my machine turned out.

I picked this room looking project because it looked interesting and because I didn’t know what it was. I think it is a turntalbe, but from looking on the Internet, we found out it was like a Black Maria which was invented by Thomas A. Edison. It looked weird. A Black Maria is a stage. It’s on wheels so you can move it. It turns so that the sun can always shine on the actors. A movie camera was attached to the front of the stage. The film wasn’t very good so the actors always had to be in the sun so that the film would turn out.

This is Lia helping fix the worm and crown gear.

Now I’m pretty much finished. I kind of forgot some pieces. The hardest part of building my project is making the worm gear. I could not think of how to put it together. It looked confusing to me, but I did it. I kept putting it together until it worked.

I started programming the brick to move the turn table. It was a little challenging. We had to brain storm how may seconds it should go, and which way I wanted to make it go.

Jamie and Brianna in the building.

The Abandoned Building One day two kids named Jamie and Brianna went to an old abandoned building. They saw some kind of stage room. They were so curious that they went into the building. In the building they saw a big video camera. They also saw a big bookcase with a table. They were not so amazed until they saw a part of the building with papers and large buttons. Jamie got on the stage and then Bianna pushed one button. When she pushed the button a light went on. She pushed a second button and a buzzer went off. It was annoying so she turned it off. Then she pushed the third button. Brianna thought that nothing happened. She kept facing toward the buttons. While Brianna was fiddling with the buttons the stage started to move. She did not notice it. When she turned around Jamie was gone! Jamie was so scared that he started crying softly. Bianna could not hear him crying so she kept searching for him. Then Brianna had an idea. She remembered the table Jamie was sitting on, but it was gone. She started to think that when she pushed the third button the stage must have been turning. She pushed the button again. Then the stage started turning slowly. All of a sudden she saw Jamie. She was so relieved. She and Jamie never went nto the building again.

This is the worm gear connected to the crown gear.

I learned how to make a a worm gear work with a crown gear. It looked really confusing. It was really difficult because I’ve never seen those parts before. Another thing I learned was to make things with using only pictures for directions. At first I thought I would never get it because the manual only used pictures. I learned why and what reason people give gears such weird names. It turns out that they have a good reason. The worm gear looks like a little tube with ridges going around the outside. The ridges look like the lines that separate the worm into segments. The ridge on the worm gear is only one whole ridge that goes around. The crown gear has teeth that stick up. The teeth look like the pointy parts on the top of a crown. The crown gear turns around. The teeth go into the spaces between the ridges on the worm gear. The worm gear is attached to an axle and that turns too.
