The Spoon-Scooper
10/28/2003
The big idea that started my project was my mom and a spoon. My original plan had been to make a dog that went after a Frisbee on my Art Car. I went home and told my mom. Then I told her That Ms.Thimmecsh had told me to do something more challenging and I was stumped. She got a spoon and asked me what you could do with a it. That was how the idea for a scoop/and or shovel car was born. The idea was to have some way to make a scoop go forward, down, scoop, come up again, come back, turn, go forward and down, dump its’ load in another receptacle and repeat the whole process again.

The biggest problem I encountered was when I was building the scoop/move mechanism. I had to get the timing exactly right, and I could not get the machines to do exactly what I wanted. I had to keep going back to the computer and making minute adjustments to my program. That was maddening. Also, my deadline was creeping up on me. I had to revise my whole program and rebuild my mechanism.

One of the main things that I learned was that when building the base of the car, always make your wheels wide apart, so that your vehicle has a wide stable base. Another thing that I learned was that If your measurements on something aren't absolutely perfect, then you will be in a lot of trouble. I was gluing receptacles for the spoon to scoop in and out of, they weren’t perfectly in line, and the spoon poured stuff everywhere.
