Calder Box
11/18/2003
The big idea that started my Calder box was when we looked at examples of different kinds of sculptures. The sculptures were made up of abstract shapes. Abstract means that they don’t look like anything real. We made a few sets of of abstract shapes. I made 3 sets of them and used one set on my box. Then I used that set of abstract shapes as an influence for my other sets of shapes.

I think my biggest problem that I had during this process was when I couldn’t get all or some of shapes to work at once with rubber bands. I fixed that problem by using ribbon instead.

By doing this project I learned a lot of things. I learned that you have to have a lot of patience when things don’t work. I also learned that you can’t get frustrated when things don’t work either. Another thing I learned is that it’s best to use sandpaper on dowels and then use ribbon to make things work together. The sandpaper created friction so that the ribbon could grab on to the dowel rod. Rubber bands get stretched out and don't work very well.

When you turn the crank it moves the dowel rods to make the shapes interact with each other.

These shapes are placed on my box and are ready to move.
