jitter_city01.jpg I did a mini-workshop for a group of 4- and 5-year-olds using the jitterbug kits as a starting point. Or maybe the starting point was more this "city" of buildings and streets (the streets were the blue paper on the floor) that my 5-yr-old built. He wasn't interested in making "jitter bugs" but he was interested in making jitter machines that could drive around the city. jitter_city.jpg City environment for the jitter machines We had a bunch of materials that seemed like they could be used to make either machine-like or animal-like creations. The most successful materials might have been the little pieces of pre-cut wood shapes -- the kids could color them, and stick them directly into the foam. And the bells, which they strung on the pipe cleaners. jitter_materials.jpg The spinning counterweight on the motor suggested a propeller to a couple of kids.... jitter_airplane01.jpg And one of the blue roads became a runway. jitter_city02.jpg Several of the airplanes and other machines made jingling sounds as they moved... jitter_jingle.jpg
