Snail's Pace Automata

Last week I made an automata sculpture using a clock motor. I attached the main rod to the hour hand, and put 12 cams on it. When I made it, I was thinking about how to show time a different way (this is sort of like a linear clock), and also I really wanted to make an automata that is motor, not crank driven. The cams move very slowly - so slowly that you can't see them move if you just stare at it, so you have to go do something else and come back to notice a change. time-automata2_0_0.jpg This picture was taken at night. You can see the difference between the day picture and the night one (but you wouldn't see it if you were just staring at it!) It's hard to see in these pictures, but there are tufts of grass on the top, and a feather that waves back and for on a second hand pendulum. I'd like to keep working with this kind of motor, that came from AxMan - maybe make something with the minute hand. I think it would be pretty easy to make a few standardized parts (like the box and a piece to connect the rod to the motor shaft) and have people make their own in a workshop. The cams are made of the lids of gallon milk jugs. The other materials are scrap wood, wire, dowels and plastic straws for the rods, and the feathers and plastic grass. time-automata1_3.jpg This picture was taken during the day. If you look closely, you can see the tufts of grass on the top.
