spin
Drawing made with a simple spinner. During the workshop this spring, I worked with a spin art machine. This first drawing is made with watercolor, a very fine brush, and a spinner that spinned in one direction. I experimented with the speed of the motor a bit -- too slow, and it just didn't have enough power to turn the paper.
Made with a spinner that goes forward and backward.

After trying some photographs with very long exposures, I thought I'd try making some drawings using a machine that could make many many repeated marks. Here's the machine:
Drawing machine with markers. The program ran the motor forward for about 1/2 second, then backward, and repeated about 100 times. I thought that it would just draw the same line over and over, one on top of the other.
Projection Ideas
I've been thinking about projections: things to project, ways to project, and how crickets fit into these ideas. Margaret found a cool site, Light Show Pioneers, that has a lot of projection machine patents on it. They're incredibly convoluted to read, but cool ideas. I played around a little with water and dyed vegetable oil (using a oil-soluble dye called Sudan III) and moire patterns.
