I haven't looked at Alan Rath's work in a while, but once I started thinking about creatures, I was reminded of his robot inventions. He often combines robot structures with video screens, as in this robot - no body, just a roaming eye: There are many many more images on his site, and videos of the robots in motion.

I just recently discovered the sculpture of Tara Donovan. She uses very ordinary materials - toothpicks, plastic cups, plastic straws, fishing line - but whatever she uses, she uses a lot of it.
